"GK Wars" a Success; Four Champions Crowned - 9/10/2025

(October 4, 2025) - NFC's inaugural Goalkeeper tournament, "GK Wars," was a sucess.  Seventeen keepers competed at All Seasons Soccer Academy, under the international GK Wars format, and five age group champions were crowned.

"Goalkeeping is a distinct sport from playing soccer," said Eric Shanahan, NFC's GK trainer.  "This tournament was designed to prepare our players for State Cup, to give our GKs an opportunity to succeed at their sport, and create a friendly, competitive environment so our younger GKs could learn from watching our most advanced athletes."  Feedback from the participants was positive.

The format of the competition stressed distribution, shot saving ability and coverage of the box.  Two GKs squared off in a 20x30 grid, two full sized goals, and a six yard GK box.  The GKs competed for two 2 minute halves.  Play began with the ball at midfield, with both GKs on their goal lines.  After play was signaled, both GKs sprinted to midfield to win possesson and take the first shot.  From that point, possession alternated, with each GK trying to score by throw or kick.

The highlights of the competition were (1) Zach Sipherd's 15-14 win over Matt Bauman after nine tie-breaker PKs, and (2) Zach Mazgaj's competitive wins over Steve Morris and Andrew Stothert.  Winners of each age bracket received Nike US National Team GK jerseys.  Due to the number of U14 boys GKs, NFC has decided to offer a second competition and championship for that age group.  Arrangements for this competition will be coordinated by Shanahan.

The 2003 age group champions were:

  • High School Boys: 1st - Zach Mazgaj, NFC U18 Caliente; 2nd - Andrew Stothert, NFC U17 Diamante
  • High School Girls: 1st - Kelly Stillmock
  • Middle School Boys: 1st - Zack Sipherd, NFC U15 Invictus
  • Middle School Girls: 1st - Katie Wessling

Congratulations to all competitors!
